Extended Care and Rehabilitation

VAMC Beckley Extended Care and Rehabilitation (ECRC) Program provides physical medicine and rehabilitation, transitional care, as well as home and community care. Our Geriatrics and Extended Care (G&EC) is also a part of this program.

About the Program

The ECRC program at VAMC Beckley (West Virginia) represents a coordinated continuum of services which may include institutional care, ambulatory services, or community based care as required to meet the needs of the individual veteran.  Referral to individual G&EC services should be initiated by the patient's principle provider.  Specific services available are:

Institutional-based services:

  • Palliative Care Program
  • Respite Care Program
  • Nursing Home Care Unit (NHCU)
  • Extended Care and Rehabilitation Center (ECRC)
  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services (PM&R)
  • Recreation Therapy
  • Employee Wellness Program
  • Spinal Cord Injury and Dysfunction (SCI&D) Program
  • Pet Therapy Program
  • Geriatric Clinic
  • Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) Program

Community-based services:

  • Community Residential Care
  • Community Home Health Referral Services
  • Homemaker/Home Health Aide Services
  • Community Contract Nursing Home
  • Home Based Primary Care (HBPC) Program

Services Offered

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R)

PM&R services include —

  • occupational therapy
  • physical therapy
  • speech therapy
  • kinesiotherapy
  • specialized services to veterans in need of rehabilitation following amputation, stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury

Extended Care and Rehabilitation Center (ECRC)

The ECRC is a hospital-based transitional care unit. ECRC maintains an average length of stay of 32 days. Most patients require extended rehabilitation and care following surgery and/or lengthy hospitalizations before returning to independent living.

Home and Community Care (HCC)

HCC consists of programs that manage care in veterans homes and community settings. Services include —

  • home-based primary care
  • home telehealth care
  • adult day health care
  • community nursing home care
  • skilled and unskilled home care
  • home hospice care
  • home IV therapy
